Reading a label through the musicians in its catalogue

Compare catalogues without reducing their identity to a volume ranking.

Begin with credited appearances

The comparison connects each label to the musicians most frequently present in the selection. Link thickness represents the number of distinct records retained in the view.

This choice foregrounds observable collaborations and allows comparisons based on the same unit of account.

Spot paths across catalogues

A musician connected to several labels becomes an editorial bridge. That path can prompt questions about changes in context, line-up or period without assigning a single uniform sound to each company.

The number of appearances is not an artistic ranking. It only measures frequency within the selected corpus.

Add the label’s editorial history

The graph supplies a visual contents page: prominent names, crossings and periods. A label history also requires sources about producers, studios, reissue policies and economic context.

JazzMesh helps formulate those questions and document the path that brought them into view.
