How JazzMesh builds a traceable path

From data dump to visualisation: the decisions that make an exploration explainable and revisable.

Define the boundary before calculating

Every publication begins with an identified snapshot, a period and explicit inclusion rules. The current public scope covers release years from 1920 to 2026 and records with at least two credited performers under the producer’s rules.

A bounded corpus is not an exhaustive one. Boundaries make results reproducible and comparisons understandable.

Anchor identities carefully

Public names and Discogs identifiers provide the foundation. Wikidata anchors may specify a type or connect an identity when an exact, documented match exists.

Ambiguous cases remain in editorial quarantine. Automated validation is never presented as human ratification.

Publish the calculation with its limits

Communities, positions and paths are produced by JazzMesh from reconstructed relationships. They do not come from the sources and must not be confused with established musicological facts.

A published view retains the snapshot identifier, field semantics and source rights. It can therefore be corrected, compared with a later version and discussed publicly.
